La Belle Vallée de la Loire

Image

Once again.. long time no see my lovelies. How have you all been?

Recently life has been quite fabulous. I passed all of my A level exams, got into a college to do an Art foundation course and I got a new job! It’s all been happening in the life of Holly!

I was also lucky enough to spend 2 weeks in france visiting my Aunt in the extremely beautiful Loire Valley.

I met some wonderful people, practised my terrible french, and learnt a lot about enjoying the simple things in life while I was there, and I thought I would share a few photos of my adventures with you.

IMG_4416

My Aunt lives in a gorgeous village called Montreuil-Bellay. The architecture around is just unbelievable, and there is even a hogwarts-esque chateau right in the centre of the village!

IMG_4407

IMG_4426

On the third day I was there, the village was holding an art competition. I wandered around the village with my camera and tried to make friends with as many of the artists as possible haha! There was some beautiful work happening (and most of it made me feel quite unworthy to be honest), and I met some very interesting people, who then proceeded to nag me to enter the art competition (oops).

IMG_4429

The man in the photograph below had one of the best ideas ever in my opinion. Instead of using paint, he painted only using Red Wine! I just thought this was such a fantastic idea- so original (and so very french, ha) I just wish I could remember his name.

The sunday market in the village was probably the busiest it ever gets in Montreuil-Bellay. It made a nice change to see all of the locals out and about, as they were usually tucked away inside their houses, or out doing other things in the week.

IMG_4466

IMG_4467

I have a slight obsession with french chateaus, so of course I had to take a visit to the famous Saumur Chateau, as the last time I went was almost 10 years ago. Lets just say, it totally lived up to my memories.

IMG_4480

IMG_4490

IMG_4492

I also got to visit one of the exciting troglodyte cave villages they have scattered around the region! I have never visited one of these before, and I was completely amazed at the idea of people still living in caves until very recently. There was even an underground church located directly underneath the ‘real’ above-ground church of the non cave village. When the village church got burnt down during the protestant vs catholic disagreements in the past, this cave church became a secret place that only a select number of people knew about- and could secretly go and worship in. I found it fascinating and amazing, and if you ever get the chance to visit a cave village, definitely do it- you wont be disappointed.

Finally, on my last day I went to visit the beautiful walled village of the famous Cardinal Richelieu. As it was a monday, (and the french have to have their mondays off! haha) there wasn’t much happening, so after a quick look at Saint Bernard  in the church (Bernard being my second name, I couldn’t pass up the chance!) we decided to take a picnic to the Parc de Richelieu just a walk across from the gates of the town. It is such a beautiful park, and I had a lot of fun butterfly spotting!

I had forgotten how beautiful the Loire Valley is- the fields of sunflowers and roses at the sides of the roads, how remote you feel driving through the country roads- yet you are never far from a village with everything you could need (and you are never far from a Super U 😉 ) and just the pure beauty of the architecture and nature of the place- there is literally no place nicer to be during the summer time. Who needs beaches when you have all the beautiful picnic areas and rivers you could ever need?

I hope your summers have all been as perfect as mine has!

We’re all quite mad here, you’ll fit right in

IMG_4288

Is it normal for an 18 year old girl to have an Alice in Wonderland tea party on her own? Because that’s what I did yesterday. And it was great fun.

Ok, so I did actually have a reason for carrying all of this stuff into the woods- mainly for my photography exam next week (see this is how unorganised I am- my exam is next week and I only just started taking photos oops), but I thought I’d share some of the unedited original images with you before I completely ruin them next week with my appalling photoshop skills. Haha!

To be honest I did get a few weird looks from dog walkers. And that was probably wasn’t just down to the fact that I was taking pictures of cake, but because to get into the mindset of the mad hatter, I thought it would be a fantastic idea to walk around the woods wearing a top hat. I definitely think they should come into fashion- I would totally jump on that trend, haha!

I went back to the woods again today, and looked equally as insane, but it’s ok. The pictures from today’s adventure will be up very soon!

Ahh it feels good to be back! 🙂

Outfit of the day

Image

(Sorry if this post sounds insane, I spent all day doing photography coursework and I think my brain has melted)

HI EVERYONE LONG TIME NO SEE AHHH

I feel like i’m neglecting you and i’m sorry. So here is a quick little outfit of the day post so you don’t all forget that I exist.

Recently I’ve started dressing in long skirts- which is pretty rare for me- I dont really own many long skirts (and I feel kind of like I look like a mad cat lady, but oh well it’s always fun to be original!)

So, I went to the woods the other day to hang all of my jewellery in a tree (please just don’t ask), and I felt like it would be the perfect opportunity to take some outfit photos.

IMG_4024 copyIMG_3986 copyIMG_3971 IMG_4053 copy IMG_4034 copyMy hat, coat and shoes are all from Topshop, my skirt is from Miss Selfridge, my gloves are cashmere ones from somewhere in Scotland (sorry that’s really not helpful),  and my scarf is from accessorize. And i’m sure you all know about my bag by now 😉

Are you all having a great weekend? I look forward to catching up on all of your blog posts really soon ❤

My Current Obsessions

Image

photo

Hi lovelies- its finally half term which means I finally have some time to relax and unwind. I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to share with you some of the things that I love to do in my spare time (is it sad that most of them revolve around the internet? heh)

20130218-211548.jpgThe first thing that I absolutely love is the ipad magazine “Just another fashion magazine”. Ipad magazines in general are really fascinating to me- I love how interactive they are- most of them giving off a really ‘bloggish’ feel and style. This one is relatively cheap, and really well put together, I always have fun looking through the articles, and the links to new websites that I would never have found without it! If you have an ipad (or an iphone- not that I have one, but I assume it’s available on there too), definitely check it out on the newsstand- some of the past issues are only 69p if you dont want to commit to spending £1.50 (or however much it is) until you are completely sure whether you like the style or not!

Amelie has always been one of my favourite films. One of my little habits when i’m bored is to watch clips of it on youtube (which usually results in me digging out my dvd and watching the whole film). Anyway, this clip is one of my absolute favourites from the whole film, just because it is so cute. If you’ve never seen Amelie go and watch it now.

As you are probably all aware, it’s London Fashion Week this week, which means I’m constantly online trying to keep up with the shows. I have such great fun doing this- maybe one year i’ll be lucky enough to actually physically attend (we can always hope right ha). You all know I am a huuuge fan of Mulberry- so here are a few photos from their Autumn Winter 2013 show. (Have I ever mentioned that I am completley and totally in love with Cara Delevingne before? But then again, who isn’t?)

imageAnd finally, this app is literally taking over my life. I even had a dream about it the other night. It’s called ‘triple town’, and if you’ve never tried it, you have to download it. It’s so simple, but its really fun- i’m not even a person that usually plays games on my phone- but this is brilliant ok. Hah.

The lovely Kareen from www.ziba-blog.com  has recently nominated me for a Liebster Award!! It’s such an honour coming from her, and I’ll make a post all about it really soon 🙂

That’s all for now- I hope you all had a great monday!

Macarons~

Image

IMG_3880

I once again apologise for dropping off the face of the earth for a whole week. Man I cant wait until my interview is out of the way!

Anyway, I finished all of my beautiful Laduree Macarons (yes all of them, Holly doesn’t share macarons), and can I just say they were perfect. I think I would marry them if it was socially acceptable.

The flavours that I got were Pistachio (Which was so so so nice, and the only one that I didn’t take any photos of because I took it to work with me to eat at lunch haha!), Vanilla, Lemon, Rasperry, Rose and Brazil Pure Origin Chocolate (one of their limited edition Macarons).

I treated myself to a gift box too, because the boxes are pretty, and I thought that I could keep little things in my room in there!

IMG_3890

IMG_3872

IMG_3876 IMG_3881

IMG_3883

IMG_3884

IMG_3887

IMG_3888Ok, so the first one that I tried was Vanilla. Whilst it wasn’t my favourite from the box, it was still pretty lovely.

IMG_3914

IMG_3923This is the Raspberry macaron and I’m actually shocked to say that it was my least favourite out of the ones I bought! It wasn’t horrible though, I dont think a macaron could be horrible even if it tried- lets just say, I wouldn’t buy this particular flavour again!

IMG_3930

IMG_3934Lemon (anything lemon flavoured is yummy in my opinion).

IMG_3936

IMG_3943This one was strange. Really really nice…. just in a strange way. In the shop it was named “Rose Petal” and I have no idea how to describe this, but the taste was actually somewhat like the smell of rose petals. It was interesting, and I would definitely buy this flavour again!

IMG_3945

IMG_3950Ok so I saved the best for last. This one was insane. It kind of tasted like a macaron/ chocolate brownie and it was just perfect. It was so nice that I forgot to take a photo of the inside until I was almost 3/4 the way through haha! I’m sad that this is only a limited edition, because it was amazing- if you have the chance, definitely try one before they vanish again.

So overall, they were all gorgeous, and if you’ve never tried a Laduree macaron, I suggest that you fix that as soon as possible!

I apologise for the state of my nails in these photos, I didn’t realise quite how bad they were until I looked at the photos on my laptop. Oops.

I have lots of posts planned, and I promise I wont disappear for a week again!! How have you been? I’ve missed you all.

Much love,

Holly

London

Image

So today I decided to take a break from everything and treat myself and my mum to a shopping spree in London. I always feel that shopping sprees are the perfect excuse for lots of food and coffee, I mean, you cant walk about all day on an empty stomach can you?

IMG_3852

IMG_3851

IMG_3906

So after an shamefully chocolatey breakfast at my favourite patisserie, we walked to the train station to begin our day. Our first stop was covent garden, because I have a stupid obsession with macarons, and they have a Laduree store there, and I was dying to try some of their famous macarons. I bought a box of 6, and once I have tried all of them i’m going to make a separate blog post dedicated to them, trust me they deserve it hah!

IMG_3854 IMG_3870 IMG_3858 IMG_3857

As it is nearing valentines day, the people at covent garden have set up this adorable place where couples can go, and padlock hearts and messages to metal cages spelling the word love. I know that they have a similar thing to this in korea, and I have always thought it was the most adorable idea.

IMG_3869 IMG_3866 IMG_3864 IMG_3861

(More food hahaha!) I got a delicious Red Velvet cupcake from Candy Cakes and it was fabulous. The icing was perfection, and the fact that it had glitter on it make it 50 thousand times cooler ah 😉

I ended up spending quite a lot of money, and it was a lot of fun, so I thought that I would show you a mini haul (to be honest I gave up taking photos of london once I had a few shopping bags because I’m lazy oops)

IMG_3873 IMG_3880Here are the macarons I bought, i’m just so excited about tasting them all. I paid a little extra to have them put in a box, but I think its worth it because the box really is pretty, and I will definitely be able to find a use for it in my room.

IMG_3891 IMG_3892 IMG_3894I’m such a sucker for anything cute that I can hang from things like drawer knobs and handles. I dont really know what I’m going to do with the bucket, but I just couldn’t resist the colour and the polka dots (plus it was only 99p, a bargain right?)

IMG_3893I bought this hand cream from L’occitane. I have never actually purchased anything from this brand before, but I tried one of the testers and just instantly fell in love- it smells really lovely, and unlike some hand creams it doesn’t leave your hands feeling sticky or greasy after you use it.

So… I found a Cath Kidston shop… and as you can see.. I went a little bit mad. Their shops are always so pretty and I just cant resist and I decide that I need to buy everything and ah it doesn’t go well for me hah.

IMG_3895 IMG_3896I bought the 2013 diary because it was half price, and plus it’s already February so I suppose that it is about time that I accepted the fact that it actually is 2013.

The edges of the pages are printed with different patterns, and there is a lovely little plastic zip wallet attached to the back cover so you can keep loose bits of paper safe if you have no where else to put them.

IMG_3898I bought the passport holder because I actually use my passport as my form of ID- I dont have a drivers licence so I have to carry it with me if i’m going to buy anything age restricted. I thought that getting a passport holder might make it slightly safer and make it look less passport like (ok I dont know it was just cute ok).

IMG_3899The tissues were only 89p it would be a crime not to buy them really…

IMG_3901I bought this lanyard to attach to my college locker keys- they always seem to get lost at the bottom of my bag, and I hope with this I will be able to find them a bit quicker (probably wont work).

IMG_3902Gah ok this lip balm is so so so nice. I really cant explain the smell but it is literally the most perfect thing in the world.

Paperchase is another weakness I have in my life. I mean really, who can resist cute stationary? There is actually a paperchase literally 5 minutes away from my college which I spend my life in, and it was nice to go in a different one for a change (even if they sold the same stuff…)

IMG_3903I feel that highlighters with cats on them are a necessity in life ok just look at them.

IMG_3904Ha ok so I thought these would be fun for a future blog post where I can fail at making cookies again!!

IMG_3905

My hands are permanently cold. Seriously, even in the summer my hands are cold- and they have been ever since I was a baby. So when I saw this cute little hand warmer I had to buy it! It has an owl on it what more do I need to say really.

So, it was a really great day, my mum even decided that she wanted a mulberry purse so I had great fun helping her choose that (can I just get a full time job as a personal shopper that would be great thank you).

Did you all have a good day?

À bientôt!!

P.S Can I just say how happy I am about parliament finally approving gay marriage. It gives me a little bit more faith in humanity.

Birch Box

Image

IMG_3742

Hi guys, ok so today I received my first ever Birchbox.

I was so excited about receiving this, formerly known as Jolie Box, a monthly beauty box brand has recently been taken over by the american company Birchbox, and this was their debut UK box.

This box totally lived up to my expectation, the products I received were great and some of them were completely worth the £10 cost of the box.

I was totally happy that the outside packaging was pink- forever my favourite colour, and when you opened it up there was actually a smaller cute box inside, which is nice because then you know that your products have been well protected in the post.

IMG_3744It came with a Birchbox magazine inside (cute little added extras are my favourite thing in life hah).

IMG_3746Once you opened the smaller box there was once again more to protect your products in this adorable little pink drawstring bag, which i have actually found really handy for keeping bits in on my desk (aka the messiest part of my room, seriously it’s insanely bad) in an attempt to be more organised.

IMG_3747Inside the box I got 5 products, a Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment (my favourite thing out of the whole box, it is fantastic), KMS California Volumizing Spray, Taaj Creme Mains Delhicates Hand Cream, WEI White Lotus Moisture Rich eye cream and a Teapigs super fruit tea bag.

IMG_3748The Sugar Rose lipbalm is so lovely. It is slightly tinted with pink, which is nice because during the day my benefit liptint that I put on in the morning wears off, and I never carry it with me because i’m lazy, but this adds a little boost of colour if I need it. It also smells and tastes so yummy.

This is actually a full sized product which usually individually sells for £15.50, so I am extra happy that this came in the box as that makes it a complete bargain!

IMG_3749Ok, so I haven’t actually used this volumizing spray yet, to be honest I’m not really a person that uses these kind of hair products because for a start anything like this makes my hair greasy and ew so sorry, I dont really have an opinion on this one! Do any of you use this?

The full size of this product usually sells for £14.85

IMG_3750At first I wasn’t completely sure about this hand cream. Sure, it made my hands feel lovely, but the smell is rather….. overpowering I guess you could say? And at first I didn’t really like it. But, it must be one of those smells that you grow to love with time because I’ve been using this before I go to sleep and now I actually think it smells yummy! However, I dont think it is one of those hand creams that I would keep in my bag and use in public- the smell is just too strong.

The full size of this usually sells for £10

IMG_3752I really like eye creams, so I was excited when this came. This product is really refreshing, I tried using it in the morning and it made me feel more awake after I applied it, which is always helpful as I am literally a zombie in the morning haha! The size that they give you to test though is actually stupidly small, the tube is about 2 or 3 centimeters, so use it sparingly if you want it to last a while!

The full size of this product usually sells for £60 (which probably explains their small tester size), and i’m not sure I would pay that much, but if you want a really high quality eye cream, then this is for you.

IMG_3751Ok I love tea so I got quite excited about this (except what is the point of having caffeine free tea, I will never understand), but I actually haven’t got around to trying this yet. As soon as I do I will let you guys know my opinion!!

A pack of 15 of these teabags usually sells for £3.99 🙂

So, did you all have a good start to the week? I got my art essay finished, and I’m almost done with one of my final pieces so YES i have been productive this week so far (which makes a change hahah!!)

À bientôt!!

Cookies

Image

Ok, so anyone that knows me knows that I am completely useless at cooking ‘proper’ food. I’m not kidding, the other day it took me about half an hour to work out how to open a tin of tuna. And i’ve almost burnt my kitchen down multiple times. Oops.

I am however, acceptable at cooking sweet things like cakes and cookies (when I live on my own I think I might have to just survive on cake).

Today once I got home from work, (literally had the customers from hell today good god), I decided to make some cookies to try and de-stress.

This recipe is egg free (not because I have any allergies, simply because I never seem to actually have any eggs in my house), and it’s really quick and easy. If you like super sweet things, give this a go 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 200g (7oz) of plain flour
  • 85g (3oz) of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
  • 55g (2oz) of caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 dessert spoon of water
  • Toppings of your choice!! I went for little white chocolate stars.

IMG_3803

IMG_3805Step One

Heat the butter, sugar and syrup in a pan, making sure it doesn’

IMG_3809Step Two

Sieve the flour into a large bowl, and then pour in your melted ingredients.

IMG_3810Step Three

Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the water and add to the other ingredients.

IMG_3812Step Four

Combine all of the ingredients together to form a dough.

IMG_3813Step Five

Take golf-ish size balls of dough and place them on an oiled baking tray.

You will need to bake them for about 10 minutes at 190Celsius (gas mark 5, 376Fahrenheit), however, the timing really depends on whether you want your cookies to be soft or crunchy- keep an eye on them and take them out of the oven when they are to your liking 🙂

Step Six

Decorate and enjoy!!

IMG_3815

Ok, I may have left these in the oven slightly too long, but you get the idea.

Did you all have a fantastic weekend?

À bientôt!!

Sketches

Hi everyone.

First of all, I am so so sorry that I disappeared for a few days, I have been crazy busy with college work- I swear all of my deadlines are next week aah. Plus, I have an interview soon where they require 32 pieces of work along with your portfolio, so gah life has been hectic.

I thought I share with you some of the stuff that has been making my life so busy this week. Recently I have been focusing on studies of hands, and how they change with age. I’m the kind of person that is completely useless at painting, I love drawing and pen and ink is literally my favourite medium when it comes to art 🙂

Babies hands are really fun to draw, I adore their cute little chubby fingers and the little dimples on their knuckles.

Scan 3

I like drawing hands so that the lines of the palm can be seen too, because to be honest I suck at shading areas that dont have much detail, I work better when there are lines and folds to expand from.

This is actually a transcription of Henry Moore’s “The Artist’s Hand III”. You should definitely take a look at the original because it is unbelievable and I honestly dont do it any justice here.

Haha ok, once again, so sorry that I disappeared, I hope it wont happen again too soon.

I’ll upload this weeks style inspiration tomorrow 😀

À bientôt!! ❤

Paris

Image

I thought i’d write a post about my ~kind of~ recent (if you can call October recent) visit to Paris.

So, I was lucky enough to get the chance to spend my eighteenth birthday in Paris. It was a part of France that I had never visited before, and I have always been beyond fascinated with capital cities (although dont get me wrong, I absolutely love the loire valley, where I have spent most of my time in France, but paris is completely different.)

I arrived in Paris late on the day before my birthday after a unnecessarily long journey (can I just say ferries are such a waste of time, planes are the best invention ever). We stayed in a hotel in the business district of Paris- La Defence- and the hotel was fabulous. My room overlooked the River Seine, I could see the Eiffel Tower lit up in the distance and I had wifi in my room- an obvious necessity 😉

Lets just say i could of quite happily lived in that room forever.

IMG_2945

On the morning of my birthday I woke up to this fantastic view. I couldn’t of been any happier- I’m pretty sure I just spent half an hour just drinking tea and staring out of the window.

20121008_080949

After a perfect breakfast of croissants and pain au chocolat (aka the best inventions ever), we left to have the cheesiest touristy day ever- sightseeing. I usually hate anything touristy and prefer to discover places on my own, but my parents had booked a guided tour of Paris and this was actually totally fun- we went to the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and ended with a cruise down the River Seine.

The river cruise was great, because it meant we got to see a lot of the beautiful architecture that makes Paris so special. And it gave me a chance to take a lot of photos.

IMG_3030

After the tour was over, it was time to explore some of Paris’s famous shops and cafe’s. Basically my favourite hobby haha!

First of all we visited a famous department store called Galeries Lafayette. It was huuuuge, there were 7 floors and to look at everything would probably take you all day, at least. But inside it was beautiful. In the cosmetics department, there was a dome ceiling which was decorated and surrounded by colourful balconies looking out from the other levels of the store.

DSCF0168

It was pretty I think all shops should look like that to be honest. If you went to the roof of this store, there was a balconied area that gave an amazing view of the Paris skyline. People were sitting up there on armchairs, drinking champagne and socialising, the perfect life haha!

20121006_130122 20121006_130135 IMG_3067

A nice part about Paris is that you can see the eiffel tower from almost anywhere in the city. It just made me really happy hah 🙂

The rest of the day was just wandering around Paris. We went for coffee in a cute little cafe, which was lovely, even though it rained pretty much all day.In the evening we visited the Latin quarter to go to a (very small) restaurant. Hands down this was the most atmospheric, lively restaurant i have ever been to.
There was a set menu (very french, onion soup for starters, followed by beef bourguignon, a cheese board and then apple tart for dessert) with unlimited wine included in the cost. Oh and champagne. Ha. Not only was the meal lovely, but there was an accordion and a guitar player walking up and down the restaurant all evening, interacting with the guests. They were hilarious.

The restaurant owners somehow found out it was my birthday, and got the accordion and guitar players to sing happy birthday to me (which the whole restaurant joined in with) AND they brought me cake and (more) champagne. It just made the evening even more unforgettable.

20121006_201741

Paris by night is so beautiful, being know as the city of light, you are in for a real treat when the sun goes down. I really recommend just wandering around with a camera after night fall, you wont regret it.

20121006_213314

(Sorry this photo isn’t exactly sharp, blame the wine haha)

So, the next day I just spent the day wandering around and taking photographs. The best way to explore Paris quickly is to buy a carnet for the metro- meaning you get 10 metro tickets for €12. A few highlights from the day include Nutella Crepes (oh my god the best things ever invented, I would literally marry one if I could), and a trip to the famous Louvre art gallery. Plus a huuuge bonus was that it was much sunnier than the previous day, meaning that we took a lovely walk through the park near the Louvre (most adorable place I have visited in my life).

IMG_3073

IMG_3196 IMG_3197 IMG_3206 20121007_195633

Oh, in the evening we went to Montmartre to see the artists. It was so inspiring, I literally was so shocked (and completley jealous) at their ability to draw such realistic drawings of people in less than 10 minutes, just wow. We also went inside the famous cathedral and I (sneakily) took a couple of photos, because it really was unbelievably stunning. We got the chance to see and hear the nuns that live in the cathedral singing too.

IMG_3225 IMG_3226 IMG_3252 IMG_3246 IMG_3266 IMG_3302 IMG_3299 IMG_3300

I really had the time of my life, and I am completely and utterly in love with Paris now. If you get the chance, visit- I promise it will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

Sorry it took me forever to write this post, and sorry it is so long!

It has snowed about 1cm outside, so obviously there is complete chaos across the country, and college is cancelled tomorrow because england literally just cant cope with the snow. Not that i’m sad about college being cancelled of course! 🙂

I hope you had a good weekend~
