Nick Knight

Image

Ok, so it’s insane how much I love this photographer. What’s even more shocking is the fact that my photography teacher initially introduced me to his work, a man who usually suggests really boring photographers that I just cant get excited about no matter how hard I try.

Nick Knight is a British Fashion photographer, and his work is really outstanding. He has shot both editorial and advertising projects for clients including Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Lancôme, The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera House, Swarovski and Yves Saint Laurent. He is also well known for directing Lady Gaga’s music video ‘Born this way’. (And he has the coolest name ever, you cant say that you dont agree ha).

The compositions are fabulous, the dresses are fabulous, I just really love everything about these photos.

You should definitely check out his website  where there are hundreds of examples of his beautiful work- including some non fashion pieces!

Until tomorrow,

À bientôt!!

(I have no idea what happened here I obviously just forgot to press publish last night wow i’m an idiot pfft)

Weekly Style Inspiration- Audrey Hepburn & Givenchy

Ok, so I’ve decided that I’m going to start a weekly segment. Every friday I want to upload a post about someone who has inspired the fashion world, and someone who I truly adore- I think it will be fun!

I have an almost unhealthy obsession with Audrey Hepburn. She is perfect and I have been fascinated with her since I was very young. Her style was outstanding, and she was beautiful enough to make girls of any generation jealous.

Hubert de Givenchy was a french aristocrat and fashion designer, who founded the now famous and prestigious House of Givenchy in 1952. The main cause of his huge success as a designer was due to his close relationship with Audrey Hepburn, whom he dressed on multiple occasions for very important parts of her life in stunning outfits that mesmerised the world.

This video definitely captures the essence of my point here. Part of Audrey Hepburn’s huge popularity was down to the way she dressed- people loved her not only for her adorable personality, but for her flawless, quirky appearance.

Audrey Hepburn continues to inspire and change children’s lives today with her fund, raising money and providing support for underprivileged children in Africa. Definitely check it out if you have the chance 🙂

Thank you lovely readers ❤

Scott Schuman, The Sartorialist

Now, I’m sure you all know Scott Schuman, otherwise known as The Sartorialist

As a fashion photographer/ blogger, I have to say he is one of my biggest inspirations at the moment. His images are effortless, always capturing the individuality of the persons clothing, as well as managing to capture a hint of their personality and attitude too.

I bought one of his books a couple of months back, and it has literally lived on my desk ever since. I love every single one of the images, and along with Scott’s quirky stories behind the photographs it makes a lovely addition to any fashion lovers book collection- its something that you can dip into again and again.

So my lovelies, I thought I’d show you a few of my favourites.

And of course, Garance, Scott’s girlfriend, and my favourite blogger of all time:

Scott Schuman’s work is unbelievably gorgeous, and his blog is one of those places where you can spend hours before you get bored, so if you’ve never heard of him I sincerely suggest you check out The Sartorialist .

Check out Garance’s blog too, she is so great and I am totally jealous of her life. You will love her, honestly.

Flowers

Today I thought I’d just share a few recent photos i’ve taken with you.

Literally everything i’m working on at college at the moment has something to do with flowers. I honestly dont even know why or how this has happened. I’m thinking maybe I just have this unconscious obsession with flowers that makes me include them in my ideas for everything haha!

Black and white photography is kind of my baby at the moment, I really like the different effect you can get from a photo just by taking away the colour. I also prefer close macro shots compared to full length ones.

I have so so many images of flowers saved on my laptop, if anyone were to look at my files i’m pretty sure that they would assume I was a florist. Maybe I will share some more of the photo’s i’ve taken with you sooooon 🙂

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend~

Etsy Etsy Etsy

Ok, so anyone that knows me also knows that I am completely obsessed with Etsy.

I can spend hours on that website, and before you think wow Holly, stop it, then you might actually keep your money for a change- this is actually without buying a single thing (that is what I call willpower my friends). I just love looking at people’s creations, and all the handmade things on there makes it an extremely inspiring place to be.

So, today I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite sellers, and some things that I simply wish I could have.

First of all, we have Dan- Ah Kim‘s shop. Here we find a beautiful collection of illustrations available for sale, and I just love them. I am always extremely jealous of anyone that can draw illustrations, because any time I try to draw anything cartoon like, I always end up with a drawing that looks like something a 5 year old did. Sigh.

Anyway, my favourite ones at the moment are these, just because I love the colour, the style, everything.

Right, next I have something that no gadget obsessed girl can resist. Cute phone cases.

I have to admit, I have a huuuuuge weakness when it comes to phone cases, I’ve even got a section of one of the drawers in my bedroom dedicated to them!

Blossom in May  sells some of the most adorable sleeves out there, and they will custom make a case to fit the size of your phone. I purchased one of these cute things for my beloved samsung galaxy s2, and it fits a treat. Inside they even put a lovely velvety type fabric which is great because it actually cleans your phone screen as you slide it in and out of the case. Perfect ha!!! 🙂

And finally, I have found a seller that sells some of the cutest dresses i’ve seen on etsy. They are unbelievably lovely, and although they are well out of my price range, I always have fun looking at them and gaining inspiration and ideas for things I could add to my (overflowing) wardrobe.

Frances Baker sells handmade, eco friendly clothing that is, to me, extremely stylish. I’m someone that just cant resist girly dresses, and anything that looks even slightly vintage is perfect in my opinion.

I love the photo’s here too, natural poses and the sunny countryside make me beyond happy haha!

I could go on forever really, but I’ll leave here.

Are any of you obsessed with etsy, or am I alone in my weird ways?  I actually am planning on starting my very own etsy shop soon, so look forward to it haha!!!

The jewellery of Husam el Odeh

Today I have been doing some reading of a wonderful book I received for christmas, Fashion Jewellery: Catwalk and Couture by Maia Adams . Its a great book which explores many different jewellery designers and their work, and I definitely recommend that you check it out if you have a chance 🙂

Personally, I have always loved jewellery, sculptural or more conventional pieces- I find it all fascinating. I’m specialising in jewellery design in my sculpture class at college at the moment, and i’m loving every minute of it.

sculpture copy(This is one of the pieces that I made at college recently, so I thought I’d just pop it in here to show you heh)

So, whilst flicking through this book, I landed on a page of Husam el Odeh’s work, and it instantly captured my attention.

Odeh, originally from Germany, moved to London to study Fashion Jewellery at Middlesex university. His work focuses around “the re-imagining of everyday objects in relation to the human body”, and I think his pieces are stunning.

He has collaborated with other designers to create jewellery-like chain dresses, shoes, and recently has even started designing sunglasses. And the good news is if any of you wanted to get your hands on his jewellery, some pieces of his recent collections have been pretty affordable, ranging from £100-£800.

These photos are just a few examples of my favourite pieces of his work, but you should definitely take a look at his website, there are some really beautiful things on there. 🙂

Ok that’s it for today!

Happy New Year

Now that 2013 is officially upon us, i feel its time to welcome in the new year with some sparkly champagne and a few resolutions to make this year fabulous.

Personally, i always like to have more than one resolution, and i always like to make them pretty achievable. My continuous resolutions that i still haven’t finished from last year include bake more yummy cakes more often and learn more french. Haha! Thinking about it, I should probably learn how to cook some more proper food because my limit is literally toast. With the occasional tin of pasta shapes if im feeling adventurous ooh!

This year, however, I have gone for~

1. Visit a place that I have never been to before.
This has crept onto my list for the past few years, and it is always the most satisfying resolution to fulfil. In 2012 I was lucky enough to visit Paris for the first time in my life, a city I have since completely fallen in love with. To say that I would move there in an instant is an understatement, it is a beautiful city with a fabulous way of life, the only thing stopping me from returning straight away is the boredom that i like to call college. Sigh.

IMG_3070

Here are a couple of the photos I took on my trip. I was so lucky to be blessed with such a beautiful sky on my first morning in Paris. Beautiful Beautiful.

2. Eat better, be skinnier.

I want to be skinny and elegant. Waif-like and delicate. I know its an unhealthy obsession, and I know im skinny enough already. But if i just loose a few more pounds i will be happy. I promise.
Really I just want to be stricter with my day to day food routine and cut back on the amount of ‘treats’ that i allow myself throughout the week. I want to tone my arms and I want a completley flat stomach. I want to look good for summer (bikini season is fast approaching!)

3. Spend more time dedicating myself to college art.
I need to begin to live breathe and sleep the kind of art that my college needs me to submit. I may not enjoy the themes that we have been given to study as much as i enjoy my own kind of art that I spend hours and hours reading about, but I need to put in effort to enjoy what I’m doing more. If i put in the effort now, when it comes to picking uni courses and making scary life changing decicions I hope I will be more prepared for that than I am at the moment. One of the reasons i havent applied to a uni for next year like pretty much everyone my age is because i still dont know exactly what kind of art i want to do in life. Or even if I want to restrict myself to one media at all. Who knows.

4. Blog frequently to fill my spare time reminding myself of the things that inspire me.
If I begin to loose hope, if I begin to question why I have chosen the art path at all in my life,(which trust me, has been happening a lot lately purely because I have no solid idea about my future), I hope that this blog will be somewhere that I can call home, somewhere which holds all of my true creative influences and somewhere that gives me comfort. I will gradually begin posting my own work, maybe this blog will even become something that universities would be interested in seeing- part of my portfolio in some ways.

5. Dont forget about the small pleasures in life.
Things like scented candles and fairy lights, face packs and long bubble baths, laying in the grass on a summers day and simply having time alone. I need to remember to take a break every now and then, to relax and just enjoy some of the simpler things in life, the things that make me the happiest.

Finally, enjoy life.
I’m young and I need to remember not to stress about every small thing. Sure, there will be times when i have lots of deadlines, personal issues and annoyances, but I need to remember to just breathe. I need to remember that more than likely everything will turn out fine in the end, and the stressing will have been completley pointless and unessecary.

I need to remember to keep life sparkly and fun ^^
What are your new years resolutions? Do you usually stick to them? Let me know in the comments and i will give you a cupcake of your choice 🙂

À bientôt!! ❤
